Garden junk hunting with The Farmer’s Daughter

The junk shops of the Black Hills of South Dakota

The Flea Market Gardening gang go ‘On the Road’ and visit The Farmer’s Daughter Antique shop in Hill City, South Dakota, a shop surrounded with good garden junk.

On the loose,..and going junkin’

Six of us decided, since we had known each other online for a few years, it would be fun to share our vacations in August and meet in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  I wanted to meet my dear Jeanne and delightful Marie who help me on our FMG page, Sue G, Annie and Nancy!  We were all so excited as one by one each of us arrived and we were friends in person.  Lots of laughing ensued!

Field Trip!

After we became acquainted and set up camp, we just ran wild in town!  We arrived in nearby Hill City and on the way to the train station spied an outdoor lot filled with garden ironwork arbors, old pots and pans, wrought iron globes and garden junk and art of all kinds!  We screeched to a halt!  From the outside, we were led to a little shop stuffed with all kinds of collectibles.

Lorena Freis at The Farmer’s Daughter Antiques

The Farmer’s Daughter looks as if it made its home in an old filling station on a busy corner in Hill City. Lorena Freis and her husband, Rick, bought the place in 2004…we found it when going to the train station to pick up tickets.  It’s within walking distance of the old 1800 train ride* in Hill City.

Just a paradise of junkola

We all fell in love with this place the second we stepped into the outside area filled with reclaimed garden features. Their website says they get their merchandise at estate sales, auctions, garage sales and the variety of outdoor garden junk is excellent!  These choice garden junktiques were a bit pricey, but this place feels like a paradise for a Flea Market Gardener and we got some ideas for our gardens while walking around.

Come with us and shop around…

The outdoor garden junk area,…I struggled, but Nancy got this pan!

Nancy’s on the hunt,…

Hmmm,…worth it, or not…the Rust Sistas in action. It’s been a dream to be able to shop together!

I liked this framed shelf….could I make somethimg like this?

And she scores! Some old rusty chain…wonder what she’ll do with it?

People search far and wide for these goats made from old cars

A stately old ironwork gazebo….to die for, old doors, windows, gate, galvanized, rust!  Wow!

An ex-husband? Could be…. This guy was completely made of old rusty parts

“Hey, the hubs could make that..”.Marie says.

Fantastic perch for some lucky birds…

There is an indoor area with antiques, furniture and the usual junkola that folks love to collect,…each room or area has a theme and there’s a  50% off sale shelf

A sign on a post near the cash register says,
“Store Rules”
“You break it you buy it” and
“The price is the price” so no bargaining, but the staff is very friendly.
