Meet Julie and tour her Flea Market garden
Julie
Julie Brown is an avid gardener, foodie, wife and mom, who lives in Northern Indiana in a Zone 5A garden, and fortunately has found us here at Flea Market Gardening!
Julie simply says, “I love using old, primitive cast offs in my garden.” That is what Flea Market Gardening is all about, so I asked Julie for a little more about how she started gardening and adding old junk as accents.
Julie is the queen of the garden vignette. Notice how she layers the furniture, plaques and objects together.
“This is actually a green, double sided wash tub (above) with the original lid. I put a window box on it (for now). I have had the iron headboard in my landscaping for over 15 years. I finally had to repaint it this year. The window box was a great find from last year. I think I paid $15.00 for it at the big community garage sale”, Julie says.
Notice that posts set in the ground form a backdrop.
Julie has a way of decorating the corners of her house and she starts by planting posts coming out from the corner like a fence. It acts as a background for the scene she creates. She says, “Too much stuff! This fence is made out of old posts from a vineyard down the road. They were replacing the posts, about ten years ago and they put a huge pile of old posts out by the road for “free”.
I use the dinner bell to call my husband “home for dinner”. Everyone in the area knows when it is time for dinner at the Brown’s House. Luckily I have a very handy husband who also likes rusty, primitive things. He brings home lots of treasures on his travels.”
A post ‘fence’ and neutral color house is perfect to show off Julie’s treasures.
“This table was used in the kitchen. It has a porcelain top. Unfortunately after so many years of being outside, this table bit the dust.”
“My indoor garden in the NW Indiana winter. That is my Dusty. There is a man who lives in La Porte and he paints these amazing windows.”
“Got to LOVE the old water pitcher pumps! My husband buys and sells many pitcher pumps. We have many pumps in our yard. If you buy one that needs to be painted he uses Rustoleum Regal Red.”
“My Dinner Bell that I use to call my husband. All the neighbors know when it is dinner time!”
“My favorite kind of vase in the whole, wide world. An old, blue, bubbly Mason jar. Love it.”
What is Julie working on now? Julie says, “I recently purchased a few large lots of vintage, unused fruit crate labels and unused fruit and vegetable can labels from the 1930’s. Any good ideas about what I can do with them? Here I framed a couple of them together to hang in my kitchen. As you can see, they are Bea-u-ti-ful.” Julie also moderates a Facebook page called My Foodie Friends.
