Vintage flowers from Grandma’s garden

Old-Fashioned Plants and Flowers You Need in Your Garden

Easy to grow vintage flowers that your Grandma may have planted years ago. These long time favorites our grandparents knew and loved are making a comeback in popularity for the flower garden. Planting these in and among Flea Market treasures complete the quaint look. There’s a pretty poem to read, too!

Here is a list of some flowers that might be considered old fashioned. Or maybe forgotten.  Or Classic!  Many of them are such survivors they can still be found in abandoned gardens.

Sweet Pea
Bachelor's buttons
Becky Norris's early spring border if dianthus
Bleeding Heart
Columbine
Coreopsis
English Primrose
Holly hocks immediately say 'Cottage Garden'
Hollyhock
Jane Krauter's Primrose are purrrfect for flower pots
Lamb's ear
Lilac
Mary Taylor's peonies‎
Shasta daisy
Sunflower

I hope to be such a survivor in my garden, such as a few gardeners in their 80s, and I joke that I’ll lay down to garden and weed if I have to!  If only someone can help me back up.

Worn Out Boots

I sat down in my easy chair and pulled my socks up tight

And grabbing for my favorite boots I looked at them in fright!

The leather was so dry and cracked, the sole was split wide open

The lace was all tied up in knots and looking kind of rotten

When had my boots become so old, and showing signs of wear?

It wouldn’t be too long before I’d need a brand new pair

I thought about the things I’d done while wearing them so long

The boards I’d sawed and painted to make our house a home

The gardening and yard work that never seemed to end

Cutting hay and shoveling snow and fences left to mend

No wonder they were looking old and showing signs of wear

On top of all the work we did, I wore them everywhere.

I remember seeing pictures of some worn out pairs of boots

That someone had recycled and sat beside her stoops

She had planted pretty flowers just inside, behind the laces

And the flowers grew delightfully with brightly colored faces

It made me think how much these boots remind me of my flesh

That even though it looks so tired, worn out, and far from fresh

Inside my soul is young and strong and growing everyday

With love and peace and happiness, that blooms along the way

Some day my soul will step out of these worn out boots I love

And walk away without them to my Heavenly home above

Where I will spend eternity with He who loves me best

And this old worn out body at last will find its rest.
