We love tool boxes for planters because they last! They last in all weather out in the garden and usually rust and dent and acquire lots of quaint character. Jeanne Sammons was gifted this unusual tool box…and shows how she added her unique stamp on it. Plus we show a lot more new toolbox transformations for you!
She says, Here’s a unique galvanized box I got from my sis for Christmas … I was so surprised! She knows me and what I like! I’ll have fun finding a place and planting it.
Jeanne says, “So, my sis gifted me a beat up old galvanized box for Christmas … turns out it’s called a ‘Painters Tool Box’ (used to hold brushes and turpentine)… I sanded it a bit and hubby helped me add a rusty wrench to hold it open … daughter Barb cut me out the ‘flowers’ lettering on her Cricut and finally I got to plant it this week! It turned out so good! I’m happy!”
Frana Blaylock: “I started doing this years ago and replant it every year. it is was an already old tool box someone gave my child when he was little and he is a grown up now.”
Brenda Townzen says, “All the beautiful light green sedum stayed pretty all winter. I’m going to thin it out a little and add a couple of different things to this old tool box.”
Sandi Fleury: “Here’s one I made from an old wooden tool box. Gotcha covered for tools. I added some nasturtium seeds. My dad was an awesome mechanic~ I think he would be proud.”
Jeanie Merritt: “an old farm tool box from a tractor…. red geraniums and lobelia”
Jane Krauter says, “The fishing tackle & tool boxes are from a junk store.” The best kind….cheap…
Rita Michalak says, “Have you looked at the price of “garden art” in the retail market!!!! Of course I’m going to go for “junk”, it’s all I can afford And in my opinion, rust goes with anything….it’s the “little black dress” for the yard/garden.”
Jeanne Sammons says, “Flowers are planted directly in the rusty toolbox … it was very rusty so I drilled a few holes in the bottom … it’s sitting right now on a galvanized washtub planted with zinnia seed … the idea was to keep the ‘bunnies’ from munching lunch!”

Love all these toot box planter ideas! Wow ... so many different designs and flower species! Thanks for sharing all these ideas, everyone .... and Sue for your expertise in writing these articles. Looking forward to many summer blooms!
Your tool box was the inspiration! It turned out great! My good news is I found one last weekend! Oh, joy!
I love alternative planting containers. No plain clay pots for me! So I'm inspired to add a tool box to my cache of funnels, an ice chest, wash tubs and maple syrup buckets.
You must be one of our Rusty Sisters!
Lots of different ideas and oh so lovely. I have two i need to fix, thanks for this post.
