We really like the design Annie Grossart-Steen created for this trellis, going vertically in the garden, too. Two inch lumber, screws and screwdriver and a saw are the only tools necessary. It’s downright elegant!
Annie says, “We just needed something for it to grow up..and I wanted a new working birdhouse, and thought that would be kinda neat. The birds moved in right away!”
“We used 1 1/2″ 2×2’s for the four posts and 1/2″ treated lumber for the slats going around the sides. We cut them wider at the base and then narrowing to the top. We used a nail gun and wood glue.”
You could place anything you want on the top platform. The trellis could be made large or small. ALSO, it protects the main stems or trunks from deer who like to rub their antlers on young trees.
The vines already look nice and full. Annie says, “There’s a blanket of hostas to the left they are growing on!”
“The Clematis is filling in, and I hope to have some blooms with warmer weather coming,” Annie says..”Oh! and we have a little wren nesting in the house too!”
