Through the vintage ‘metal’ garden gate

Metal, chain link and wire gates in the garden

Our gardeners love finding these metal gates at yard sales or at Flea Markets. I have found chain link gates on trash day, leaning against trees next to the trash cans. Metal and wire gates last well outdoors,…and can be used as trellises, backgrounds for flower beds, display places or even gates!  See these 20+ best ideas our gardeners have shown us:

Kay Bassett ‘Another little garden gate…’

Kay Bassett’s gate is hung off the side of her garage and acts as a trellis for a vine as well provides a place to stash some Flea Market junkola.  It enhances the corner of the building and calls attention to her flower bed plantings.

Rob Ryangate is the same color as his wall, but adds texture

Sandy Faust’s gate is practical and leads to a circle garden

Sandy Faust found this antique wrought iron gate at a flea market. She tells us, “It was full of rust. We had it sandblasted, matching poles made & repainted!”

Susan Lowery’s brightly painted gate

Terresa Stoll’s collection of chain links form a fence

Terresa Stoll says, “This is the fence/trellis I built this past weekend. I have planted Prince’s Feathers behind it and so the fence will help support the heavy plumes. I bought all of these gates and two more at an auction. I still hope to hang a ladder cross ways between the two windows of the garage to hold a collection of bird houses. Little by little….”

Jeanne Sammons’s gate is hung between two wooden poles

Jeanne Sammons hung her wire gate from two wooden poles.  She set a board across to make a shelf for birdhouse display. This gate creates a feature around which Jeanne can plant, like this Viburnum, and decorate with Flea Market finds.  She says, “This Leather Leaf Viburnum behind the gate stays green most of the Winter!”

Nancy K. Meyer’s heavy wire gate not only is her favorite color, but displays all her rusty tools

Nancy Carter uses this gate as a trellis at the end of a flower bed

Nancy Carter says, “My husband has learned to not throw away my “good stuff!” I had this old gate sitting behind my garage for 10 years or more and just put it in its new home this past week! Has perfect rust on it!”

Sue Langley’s garden using three ranch gates

“I found three 16 foot ranch gates on this old goat ranch where we make our home now.  I fenced in a vegetable garden with them and used an old screen door and some wire fencing to make up the fourth side.

This is the fourth year I’ve grown a straw bale garden in this small space.  It’s small enough that the deer are suspicious of it and won’t jump in, even though the gates are only 4 feet high.”

Christy Thomas made garden art from her vintage wire gate

Christy Thomas says, “Our windows and gates in drive-thru garage. Old bottles hold posies. There are several of these various gates on the garage wall.”

Linda Chapman “I love my garden gate!”

Have had two gates for ages and want to use them for décor. Planning to attach the single one to the wall in the living room . Wonder if I can use the double gate as a garden art piece ? Thanks for all the good ideas ! Now I can plan for spring!
