Susan’s tiled windowseat garden

One of a kind garden window seat

Truly a gorgeous mosaic, Susan Bax used her flower garden outside the window as a reference, and as an inspiration for her tiled and stained glass window seat. This idea of Susan’s will make you want to knock out a wall and put in a window seat!

Susan’s tiled windowseat inspired by her garden

Susan Bax lives in northern Wisconsin, and wanted to preserve her perennial garden for the long winter months ahead. She says, “Soooo, I covered this window seat out of mosaic glass and broken china dishes. I grouted the window seat, and just have to seal it.”  It surely does look like a reflection of the flowers outside.

Susan’s unique and reflective jigsaw

Susan says, “It took me two weeks to complete this project – working at it sporadically. To begin, you will need some old dishes; sheets of colored glass to cut up with a mosaic glass tile nipper; some pre-cut mosaic glass tiles are handy and I used these mainly for the background.”

A reflection of the garden outdoors

“It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle, but you get to choose the picture and change it as you go. I did not draw a sketch on the window seat as I made it because the flowers were right outside my window.”

“I used a glass nipper to cut china dishes and sheets of mosaic glass into appropriate shapes. I used some pre-cut 1/2 inch tiles that I ordered from a mosaic glass company online for the background of earth, greenery and sky.”

Tools and materials

“I used Aileene’s Tacky Glue to glue the individual pieces down. I cut the pieces as I worked – to fit the ‘picture.’ When I had the tiles all glued down, I waited for a few days to be sure the glue was completely dry. Then I mixed up powdered glass tile grout in almond color and spread it into all the crevices. I didn’t use gloves, but I should have because the grout dries your hands out and the sharp edges of some of the glass pieces may cut your hands.”

“After the grout dries for a few days, spray the surface with grout sealer. I may put an epoxy finish over the entire surface, but I’m not sure about that yet. This window is 11 feet by about one and a half feet at its widest point.”

“Here are close-ups of one section of the window seat.

I did a mosaic mural of birch trees in a downstairs bathroom; a small bedside table; and a table for the garden. These are all the projects that I have done in mosaic until now. I plan to do a woodland scene – mostly birch and oak trees between and above my kitchen cupboards next.”

To us, Susan’s project is brilliant,…like a reflection of the garden outdoors. What do you think?
