Puttering, verb, to occupy oneself in a desultory but pleasant manner, doing a number of small tasks or not concentrating on anything particular:
to putter about the garden on a sunny day
Here we go again, puttering in the Spring garden… the first trip to the nursery is a delight and we have seedlings to check. Weeds are waiting always, but most of all we just like to take our morning coffee and check on what’s new in the garden.
The sun is out and after breakfast and coffee I head out to the garden,…gardening jeans on,…always a size larger so they’re roomy, I stop to put my clippers and trowel in a back pocket….a small camera in another. It’s chilly, so a warm shirt covers my T-shirt.
I have a few 6 paks of flowers and succulents on the patio table and I pass those by, heading out further down the hill to check the tomato seedlings I planted a few days ago. It was cold last night, but above freezing, so I didn’t cover them,…yeeps, what if they froze?
Ah,…good they didn’t,…fine. I turn on the hose and water them and the strawberries then bend to pull a few weeds on my way back up to plant my bucket. I’m humming….
I have a rusty bucket to plant, some seeds to sow in plastic recycled containers and my patio table centerpiece to change out.
This is my version of Proven Winners container combo called Velvet Skies. I planted them in the awesome rusty bucket, I actually PAID for! Today I’ll find a place to feature this and really make it stand out on the patio. Here’s what’s planted:

Jean Morrow putters…, “Flea Market gardening is a way to save money, right? I just saved $12.99 by propagating some impatiens. Looks like they rooted and are nice and healthy. Just Google “propagating impatiens” and you will find many pages to guide you along.” Just clip the growing tips of your plants and stick in soil and perlite mix.
Valerie Haws putters… “This work table was found in a garage at an Estate Sale. I almost want to use as a coffee table in the house. Love my cabinet door shelving and my utility table for shelving too!”
Karen Settles putters… “Finally, I get to start filling up those old rusty, crusty buckets and odd pieces of treasured FMG that I have been hauling home for weeks now.”
A tall pile of fresh soil may not excite everyone,….but to a gardener,…this is heaven,…and good exercise..
Connie Eyberg putters… “This an old handmade tool caddy I found at a garage sale. I painted it and turned it into an herb garden tote.”
Ann takes cutting in spring and multiplies the number of coleus she can plant in containers and in the ground.
After allowing the cuttings to adjust to living in soil,…Ann will take further cuttings to make even more!

Julie Brown putters… “Here’s a couple of cool finds at a flea market last Sunday. I am going to plant this rusty tool box with the violas. And the rusty rounds rings will go on my “round” wall that I am planning to make on the side of my husband’s pole barn. I will call it my Eternity Wall. What have you been finding at the flea markets this year?”

Stephie McCarthy putters… “Try wrapping an inexpensive coir basket in a fabric remnant. It’s so much more unique and you can still keep the look rustic with the right fabric. We used big kindergarten stitches around the edges, but if your remnant is large enough, just tuck it in toward the bottom before adding your soil.”
