Beautiful bulbs and vibrant violas, together

Bulbs and pansies

How to get a Springtime show in your pots and containers, year after year!

How to get this Springtime show, year after year

Both Violas and daffodils are the hardiest of Springtime flowers.  Both are deer resistant and it’s a very sad deer that takes a bite of any daffodil, part of the toxic Narcissus family. Miniature daffodil because of their small scale and loose and airy seeming root system are perfect bulb companions. Other bulbs to choose are Grape hyacinths, Freesias, Checkerbloom, Snowdrops and Scilla.

Plan ahead to plant bulbs, but even Winter planting can give good results

Bulbs ordered and arrived. All these are white or mini daffodils

Daffodil bulbs in bulk can be a savings locally and on sale

To replant, here’s what I did:

First the soil was loosed carefully with a trowel and shaken into a container. This uncovered the tiny shoots!

To replant the next February, remove top soil and spent annuals.  See the tips of the bulbs?

Daffodil tips show after the top soil is loosened and shaken out The plants were eased in over the tips.

Set in pansy or viola seedlings

That’s all! Now we just wait…through rain and snow…

Fill in with soil and water well.  These are Pansy Delta Premium Beaconsfield

Bulb tips pop through the next Spring

And the next year after that…

Violas and pansies will continue to bloom as the daffodils catch up

Just remember, daffodils and pansies make a wonderful pair!
