How to refurbish wrought iron garden furniture

After you bring home a Flea Market treasure for the garden, you then begin to make it your own, many times with paint,…and especially with our favorite,…spray paint!

You’ve found your treasure and have been clever enough to see it’s potential when no one else has.  Yippee!  You have a new (OLD) table.  The off season can be a great time to finally paint that set or piece of garden furniture.  See the potential here?

This is Jake Hernandez’s old wrought iron patio table.  She set out to paint it and experimented for a few years, finally settling on the perfect color combination.  Jake  says, “My table hadn’t been painted in years so most of the paint had just worn off. I had tested a couple of colors, red and brown, over the last couple of summers.  Anyway, I just took a wire brush to it, used the air compressor to blow it off.”   Jake used Rustoleum primer spray paint, then painted with Rustoleum Ultra Cover spray paint in Gloss Deep Blue. The cushions are from Walmart.

 

 

“It’s also going to be a great color. ” Jake says,….oh yeah?  What color?  Oh, our favorite color,…blue!?  Terrific!

Jake says, “When working on a project, it is nice to have a partner in crime. In my case, I have a team in crime, our 13 yr old son likes to get in in this stuff too. Just yesterday he made a great “pick” for me himself. He says “I can’t wait to see what you do with it!”

Painting wrought iron ‘How To’:

1. Sand– Make sure you give iron furniture a light sanding before you put paint on it. You can use a sponge-block sanding pad.

2. Wash–  Spray all of the chairs and table  down with the hose, letting the furniture dry completely before applying primer.

3. Prime–  Spray a light coating of primer on the table, since it is a dull red color that you’d want to hide completely.

4. Paint–  Paint in thin coats, (SO hard to do) and use a piece of cardboard to block over spray if needed.

 

Tip: In order to NOT spray paint the lawn a festival of colors, put the chairs up on sawhorses or on a dropcloth.

Break out the spray paint, find something old and dingy and you can do this, too!
