Barb Rosen, of Our Fairfield Home & Garden gives us a tutorial on how to make garden fairies from natural materials in your garden. Twigs, seedpods and pine cones decorated with black pen and flower petals can all make a little garden magic.
Barb tells us, “Fall is the perfect time for walks in the woods and in your garden. As you stroll along, pay attention! There are natural materials all around you to make your own little fairies for free.
This is such a relaxing activity and perfect for creative play with children. (note: I used hot glue. When doing this activity with kids, use Elmer’s Glue) Many people have told me they would also make perfect decorations for a natural Christmas tree.
Below, I will show you the steps in making a fairy from a pine cone, dried hydrangea, twigs, fall leaves, dried ragweed, an acorn and a fine-tipped permanent pen. You will find the most magical thing happens as you create your fairies, each will take on a personality of his or her own! Believe!”
Step #1 ~ Draw a face on the acorn
Step#2 ~ Glue on a petal and the head onto a pine cone, add hair and twig arms.
Step # 3 ~ Add dried leaves for wings and more petals for skirts. As you work with the little fairies, you will be delighted to see that the materials take on a life of their own! Here are some other fairies I made this year!
Barb says, ” I wanted fairies for my garden but could only buy a few because they were so expensive. Some little pine cone and felt gnome Christmas ornaments gave me the idea but I took it a whole lot further with the acorns, wings, faces, etc. The acorns just looked like little faces belonged on them”
