Gardening with a cat: Meet Squirrelly

Cats have taken over the Internet and why not Flea Market Gardening, too?!  We humans have had a fascination with cats since the beginning of time.  They are silent, mysterious and zen-like. We are charmed also by their comical, and sometimes goofy predicaments that are the result of their famous curiosity. Then, they step into the garden…

A Flea Market Gardening Photo Story

Last month, we met at Jane Krauter’s garden to watch her puttering and planting.  Now, we’ll meet her dear garden companion, Squirrelly.  He really gets involved with gardening as you will see!

In a cat’s mind, all things belong to cats, …even the garden!

Yes, Squirrelly knows that this garden is his domain and he helps  Jane, whenever he’s not busy patrolling the perimeter for pesky possums.  He supervises the planting, sees that the seedlings are growing and can tell if the pots on Jane’s shelf are lined up straight.  With a 23 hour a day napping capacity, Squirrelly does make himself useful, and poses for Jane whenever she has her camera out.

How did he get his name, you ask?  Here’s how….

Squirrelly’s domain, kept safe so Jane can putter…often before breakfast.

Jane has a wonderful Flea Market Garden, with vintage painted chairs, old wheelbarrows and a potting table, hung with old and new painted watering cans.  It’s simply an old picnic table with an equally old trellis, where she hangs her watering cans.

Watch Cats

Squirrelly takes his responsibility seriously.  There will be no gophers,….on his watch.  Because of cat’s affinity for small furry or feathery things, they can be a help or a hindrance in the garden.  We’re naturally in awe of cats. They seem to know something before we do. Squirrelly knows where the gophers are…where the butterfly is.

I don’t really need these signs, do I now….

Do I look fat in this?

Come on and sit,…don’t mind me…

Flowers and felines

Jane has such a cute story-telling ability with her camera and  Squirrelly and in the garden, her other feline companions are the perfect photographic subjects!
