Meeting Debbie McMurry

Regularly, we tour a garden belonging to one of the very involved, and talented members of Flea Market Gardening.  These folks are inspirational and talented gardeners, collectors and bargain shoppers!  You may already recognize their names and photos and the next time you do, you can say hello!

Meet Debbie
“My love of gardening started while visiting my grandmother who had many gardens and chickens. I thought she had the most perfect life. She taught me all she could and I have many of her vintage garden books too,” says Debbie McMurry, who lives and gardens in Kansas.

Gardening is like therapy and very artistic to me as I love to fill every area of my yard with flowers or vintage garden items. I love tucking in chairs, tools and statues among them all.”

Granddaughter, Catie loves my potting shed

“My husband and I have three grown sons. We live on 10 acres with a fishing pond, cabin, greenhouse, potting shed and huge veggie gardens and flower beds all around. I have 30 chickens that live in a cute coop that hubby built that matches my house. I also have two beautiful grandkids that love to come and garden with me and see what new garden junk Grandma has added,” Debbie tells us.

Debbie says, “I started collecting vintage garden things when I went to auctions with my husband. Years ago no one liked what I bought but now is very hard to find as so popular. It is fun for me to rummage through old barns at auctions looking for old wheels, pulleys, tools, tractor seats….. Just what ever I think will fit in and I can haul home.”  See more of Debbie’s greenhouse and vintage garden collection here, Dreaming of my Vintage Garden

My side yard and the daylilies

“I live in Zone 6 in a small town in Southeast Kansas which gets very hot in summer and very cold in winter but we have a pretty long garden period for flowers and veggies.”

Debbie shows her talent for color combos in this huge cauldron.

Debbie, says, “Our place that we call D & D Acres is a work in progress!  It will never be finished and is always changing. I can always think of things to add and that is my vintage junk addiction!”

I have been inspired by Debbie since I first discovered Flea Market Gardening and she was one of the first FMG folks to send me a friend request. I am still inspired by her and absolutely love her gardens and junk. Her old gate is one of my most favorite areas of her yard from her wonderful collections she's shared over the past two years. This was a lovely tour of your gardens Debbie, I'm even more impressed seeing a few things I hadn't seen before. You are truly an artist and yardist! And she didn't mention how much she cans in the fall from her gardens, she is amazing!

  • I always loved Debbie's style...and I am inspired by her too...I think I've asked to come live with her at least twice "Giggle' Thanks for the tour~

  • Susan Corlies says:

I' m so glad I got to take this tour! Debbie has obviously put a lot of work into developing her land. The results are a gardener's paradise. Beautiful beds and plots- what a talented eye fordisplay of her many treasures. They are definitely to my taste! I wish I could use the slide-show as a screen saver. I could watch it over and over ( truth is, I just did!). Thank you so-o much.
