How to make a bench and planter from old bed frames

Benches and chairs, How to: Easy project ideas

Ann Elias’s headboard bench

Ann Elias recently visited an estate sale, one of the favorite pastimes for a Flea Market gardener!  Our secret is  that you get the biggest bargains at estate and yard sales. Yes! Folks just want to liquidate their property as fast as possible and often you find treasures like Ann did this day.

She says, ” Look what I found at the sale today…they were closing for the day…and tomorrow everything will be half price.  I am going to be there again when it opens…the bed frames will only be $10.00…I’d like my brother to make awesome benches from them.

Later the next day….SCORE!

Ann tells us jubilantly, “I got the two headboards and two foot-boards…all for $20.00. Very happy today!

Ann gave the bed frames to her brother to work on.  He cleverly constructed a planter and a bench for her. Then she took over. Ann says, “My brother finished my planter he made using one of the headboards I got at the estate sale. The wood is wet in the picture…from rain we got last night and this morning. I think I am going to make a fall display in it!” And so she did!

Detail-how to attach it

Ann says, “I was asked how my brother attached the bed frame to the planter. Here is a pic of it. He notched out the top piece..and then screwed the planter box to the frame.”

Late this summer she completed her project just in time for Autumn. She says, “I finally planted my headboard planter my brother made me.

Oh I am so going to make that next year!!! I have 6 headboards that I collected this year and now I know what I’m going to do with them. We even had the wood collected from dumpster diving while they were building the new houses around us. 🙂

Thanks so much for the wonderful idea!!

Ann, I am in awe of your wonderful bench and planter, equally in awe of the amazing deal you made for the headboards… I have my eye on a very unique one, a very close eye… thank you for sharing your fm creation with all of us. :))

Can you possibly send the dimensions and instructions for making and assembling the planter?

All we have is the photo, Victoria,…maybe you can estimate the general size.. Bed frames are all different sizes so you would need to tailor your project to the frame you find, right?

I’m just getting into all of this repurposing business myself and incidentally, you have the same name as my great grandmother.. “Annie Elias” my name is Anthony Elias… Very Nice work by the way 🙂
