What Jeanie did with an old birdcage, found at a yard sale. Spray paint, some soil and a pretty plant to drape down. Pretty!
Jeanie Merritt says, “On the way back from church today saw a birdhouse on a table in someone’s yard sale….SO.of course I had to stop and see how much…..’$1.00?? Ok, I can do that…..here it is….’ ”
“Here is what I did with it……. I had seen plants put in birdcages on Flea Market Gardening before, so I had myself an idea! I had to improvise somewhat because the plant needed more room. So I measured pieces of green twine (which would blend in, being barely noticeable and connected the top of the cage to the bottom with about an 8 inch gap all the way around….so when I hung it , with the roof set on sideways, it all stayed together, yet left a wide opening around the roof for foliage to bush and grow…..”
“I planted a mandevilla in a birdcage and it looked good, but after a couple of days the flowers wilted and did not look happy It was on a fenced in patio wall facing west, so I moved it to the opposite side facing the east, picked off the dead leaves, gave it a shot of Miracle Gro and put burlap in the bottom to hide the pot( which also gave shade to the roots) spritzed it with water each evening after the sun went down, and it sang, “♫ ♪ How do you like me now?? ♬ ♪ ♫” , says Jeanie.
She tells us,“Sometimes a gardener has to make “adjustments” for the happiness of a plant. I remember a day when I wouldn’t have bothered. Now, this pretty pink Mandevilla vine has twice as many blooms and again as many buds coming on! Looks like it is quite content and once it fills out… Oooooo la la!!!”
Where do our creative ideas come from? It was genius, Jeanie, to turn the roof at an angle….just ‘makes’ it! ~~ Sue

Love bird houses, I have one just ready to plant once the weather warms up enough. Great pix, many creative people gather here!
Love your idea. You could also drill a few holes in the bottom of the bird cage then put a layer if burlap add some dirt ,your, plant, more dirt to fill in and sit back and enjoy! ?? yes??? That way the plastic container doesn't get hot and might look a bit nicer?
